Every EV ad promises you'll never buy gas again, and every skeptic points out that a new battery pack costs more than most people's cars. Both things can be true at once. The honest answer to whether an electric vehicle actually saves you money in 2026 depends less on the sticker price and more on how many miles you drive, what you pay for electricity versus gas locally, and how long you keep the car. Total cost of ownership, not the purchase price, is the number that actually matters, and it tells a very different story than the showroom conversation.
Comparing an EV's price tag to a similar gas car's price tag misses most of the actual cost difference. A gas car's biggest ongoing expenses are fuel and routine maintenance: oil changes, transmission service, exhaust repairs, and the dozens of moving parts that eventually wear out. An EV has no oil to change, no transmission in the traditional sense, and far fewer moving parts, but it carries a battery that degrades over time and is expensive to replace outside of warranty. The real comparison has to include five to eight years of fuel or electricity costs, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation, not just what you sign for at delivery.

At a national average of roughly $3.40 a gallon and 30 miles per gallon, a gas car costs about 11 cents per mile in fuel. Charging an EV at home, at a typical residential electricity rate, usually runs 3 to 5 cents per mile, meaning home charging can cost less than half as much per mile as gasoline. That gap shrinks considerably if you rely on public fast chargers, which can cost two to three times more than charging at home and sometimes approach gas-car fuel costs per mile. Someone who drives 15,000 miles a year and charges almost entirely at home might save $800 to $1,200 annually on fuel alone; someone who charges mostly at public stations might save only a couple hundred dollars, or nothing at all.
EVs generally cost less to maintain year to year, since there's no oil changes, spark plugs, or timing belts to worry about, and regenerative braking means brake pads often last far longer. But when something does go wrong outside routine service, EV repairs can be more expensive due to specialized parts and fewer independent shops equipped to work on them. Insurance also tends to run higher for EVs on average, partly because of pricier replacement parts and partly because repair shops with EV certification are less common in many areas. It's worth getting an actual insurance quote before assuming the total cost picture favors either option.
For high-mileage highway drivers without reliable home charging, like renters without a dedicated parking spot or garage, the math often favors a gas car, since public charging costs eat into the savings and charging logistics add friction that a five-minute gas station stop doesn't. Gas cars also tend to have lower upfront prices for comparable trims, which matters if you're financing the purchase and want to minimize loan interest paid over time. And in regions with unusually cheap gas or unusually expensive electricity, the fuel savings gap can shrink close to zero.
Marcus bought a $42,000 EV instead of a comparable $34,000 gas SUV, largely because he charges almost entirely overnight at home for about 4 cents per mile, compared to roughly 12 cents per mile for the gas SUV given local prices. Driving 14,000 miles a year, he saves about $1,120 annually on fuel and another roughly $400 a year skipping oil changes and other routine gas-engine maintenance. After a federal tax credit reduced his effective purchase price gap to about $5,000, he calculated the EV would pay off its price premium in fuel and maintenance savings alone within about four years, and he plans to keep the car for at least seven.
Diana looked at the same math but rents an apartment with no home charging access. She calculated that charging almost exclusively at public fast chargers near her would cost her about 9 cents per mile versus 11 cents for gas, a gap too small to offset a $7,000 price premium on the EV she was considering, especially once she factored in higher insurance quotes she'd received. She bought the gas car instead and plans to revisit an EV when her building installs charging or she moves somewhere that has it.
The most common mistake is comparing sticker prices without running the ownership math at all. A close second is assuming home charging costs when you'll actually rely heavily on public fast chargers, which changes the savings picture substantially. People also often skip getting an actual insurance quote before buying, discovering the premium difference only after the purchase is final. And many overestimate how much maintenance savings will offset a large price premium if they don't plan to keep the car long enough for that math to play out.
Get real insurance quotes for both the EV and gas alternative before you buy, not after. Calculate your actual expected cost per mile for each option based on where you'll really charge, home versus public, rather than assuming best-case home charging. Factor in how many years you plan to keep the car, since a bigger upfront premium only pays off with enough time to recoup it in savings. Check current federal and state EV incentives, since they can meaningfully shrink the price gap. And if you don't have reliable home charging access, weigh that logistics cost seriously, not just the price per mile.
Neither an EV nor a gas car is automatically the cheaper option in 2026; it depends heavily on your charging access, driving habits, and how long you keep the car. Run the actual numbers for your specific situation, insurance quotes included, rather than relying on the general narrative either way, and you'll get a much clearer answer than any ad or headline can give you.
